A Green Conference

A Greener Way to Learn

International conferences are an excellent way for professionals from all around the world to gather and discuss important issues in their field, however they do have some serious set-backs. Aside from the monetary cost of airfares, hotels, taxis and food, there is an environmental cost to all of these things.

Three years ago, GOLD07 attracted 339 delegates from 31 countries. Had these same people flown to meet face-to-face, the combined carbon emissions from just the flights would have been over 2,100 tons! GOLD08 had over 500 delegates, GOLD09 900 delegates and this year we're expecting even more! Thankfully, the Internet allows us to share in the same discussions from our homes, where the only extra carbon emissions would be from running your computer.

How much carbon would it take you to do a round trip to our GOLD conference if it were hosted in Brisbane, Australia? Calculate your carbon footprint

For 339 people to run their computer for 40 hours each produces a grand total of 1.4 tons of CO2! Here's a graph of that, so you can see the difference for yourself.

This is how we make a difference !
